BPL 2027: Is the Bangladesh Premier League Happening?
Author
Short answer: not this season. On 20 August 2026 BCB president Tamim Iqbal said the Bangladesh Premier League would not be held in 2026-27. The board's reasons were franchises breaking the rules, unpaid dues, problems with bank guarantees, and around Tk 40 crore in losses for the BCB over two seasons.
The BCB says it still wants the BPL back, just not in a rush. It aims to have franchises signed off by April or May 2027 and is open to owners from outside Bangladesh. At the end of August three franchises, Rangpur Riders, Rajshahi Warriors and Dhaka Capitals, said they backed the break. As of 6 October 2026 no date has been announced for the next BPL.
What fills the gap: D3
This winter the BCB is running a separate six-franchise domestic competition called D3. It is not the BPL under another name: it has three legs in three formats, a T20 leg from around mid-December 2026, a four-day leg in January 2027 and a 50-over leg in May 2027.
How the league runs
Six or seven franchises play each other in a round-robin, and the top four go into a playoff ladder: a first qualifier, an eliminator, a second qualifier and the final, the same shape the IPL uses. Most games are played at Mirpur, Sylhet and Chattogram, with two matches on many days.
Not the first missing season
The BPL has been off the calendar before. After the 2013 edition and the spot-fixing case that came out of it, there was no league in 2014; it returned in November 2015. In 2020-21 the pandemic stopped it again, and the BCB staged the five-team Bangabandhu T20 Cup instead. On titles, Comilla Victorians lead with four, Dhaka Gladiators won the first two editions in 2012 and 2013, and Fortune Barishal won back to back in 2024 and 2025.
The last BPL
The 12th edition ran from 26 December 2025 to 23 January 2026 with six teams, with most matches played in Sylhet and Mirpur. Rajshahi Warriors won the title, beating Chattogram Royals by 63 runs in the final.
